WHAT IS THE MEANING OF ADVENT?
Today, is Advent limited only to colourful lights and decorations beautiful displays in our malls and shopping centres as well as hours of hunting for the right Christmas gifts?
What is the deeper sense of all this?
Do you remember Advent last year? Did it not look like this year in more or less the same way? Despite the fact, that since last Advent we have certainly become wiser and more experienced more involved in different aspects of our daily life.
Can we say that also in our relationship with God? Are we better, deeper more sincere and more honest? Or have we not progressed? For many years now are we living a life of stagnation? and after Christmas will our faith share the lot of the Christmas decorations and go to the storage room until next year?
At the beginning of Advent we have to answer a serious question. WHAT AM I WAITING FOR? because if this Advent will once again be for me only a time of gifts and colourful decorations then I will be afraid and I will be frustrated when Jesus talks about the inevitability of His final coming and if I am afraid, I will run away from Him. I will run into the superficiality of colourful decorations. They are beautiful and cheery but is this the meaning of Advent and Christmas?
One of the most dangerous words for our spiritual life is the word "tomorrow". This word tries to convince us that we still have time ….plenty of time…for confession…for prayer..and for liberating our busy life for God. But, in reality, with the "tomorrow mentality", we will never be able to say to God, COME LORD JESUS. This is why today, at the beginning of Advent, we are receiving from God, one more chance, one more opportunity to deepen our personal relationship with Emmanuel, with GOD WHO IS WITH US.
It is the time when we prepare not only our homes by cleaning and decorating and baking, but first of all, a time to prepare our hearts to accept God whenever He comes and God comes in so many different ways. He is coming in the Manger. He comes in His Word, in His Body and Blood during the Mass. He also comes in my neighbour, in the poor, in the needy and in the starving.
Am I ready to meet Him, do I wait for Him or DO I NOT HAVE TIME?
