The word sacrament means "a sign of the sacred." The seven sacraments are ceremonies that point to what is sacred, significant and important for Christians. They are special occasions for experiencing God's saving presence.
Reconciliation: The Catholic Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as Penance, or Penance and Reconciliation) has three elements: conversion, confession and celebration. In it we find God's unconditional forgiveness; as a result we are called to forgive others. It is typically celebrated in Grade Two before First Eucharist/Communion.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation registration is accepted at the beginning of January at the church or school offices. Candidates require a copy of their baptism certificate at the time of registration. Preparation classes begin in February at the church and the sacrament is celebrated in during lent.
First Eucharist/Communion: Catholics believe the Eucharist, or Communion, is both a sacrifice and a meal. We believe in the real presence of Jesus, who died for our sins. As we receive Christ's Body and Blood, we also are nourished spiritually and brought closer to God.
First Communion/Eucharist is usually celebrated in Grade Two. First Eucharist/Communion registration is accepted at the beginning of January at the church or school offices. Candidates require a copy of their baptism certificate at the time of registration. Preparation classes begin after Easter at the church and the sacrament is celebrated the last weekend of May.
Confirmation: Confirmation is a Catholic Sacrament of mature Christian commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts. It is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation for Catholics. It is most often associated with the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Confirmation is currently celebrated every odd year at the church (2015) and offered to students grades 6-9 and other young adults wanting to receive the sacrament. The Sacrament of Confirmation registration is accepted in September at the church or school offices. Candidates require a copy of their baptism certificate at the time of registration. Preparation classes run from October to April (one class per month) with the sacrament being celebrated in April.
